TWO people were rescued by Aberystwyth RNLI Lifeboat crews after getting cut off by the tide near Constitution Hill yesterday (Wednesday).
A passing fisherman raised the alarm at 4.50pm on Wednesday, 4 May, after spotting two people he thought were attempting to climb the cliffs to escape the incoming tide.
The station’s smaller Arancia inshore rescue boat launched first, quickly followed by the Atlantic 85 class lifeboat Spirit of Friendship.
The volunteer lifeboat crew on board the Arancia went ashore, taking first aid equipment with them, and once the crew were on the beach it became evident both casualties had not tried to climb the cliffs and sustained no injuries.
Life jackets were put on both casualties and they were taken off the beach and transferred to the Atlantic 85 lifeboat which was waiting just offshore.
The casualties were taken safely back to Aberystwyth Harbour, and stopped to watch a pod of dolphins which appeared near the harbour entrance, cheering up both casualties and crews.
Gemma Gill, Aberystwyth RNLI Lifeboat Helm, said: “We love to see people enjoying the sunny weather and the beaches around Aberystwyth, but if you’re walking under the cliffs, it’s always a good idea to check the tide tables and leave yourself plenty of time to make the journey safely.
“If in doubt, always err on the side of caution.”
