WITNESSES have described the “terrible” moments a father and son were struck by a car travelling at a “phenomenal” speed in an Aberystwyth supermarket car park last week.
A red Peugeot 108, understood to have been driven by a man in his late 70s or early 80s, collided with two pedestrians in the concourse area immediately outside the entrance to Morrisons at just after 11am on Friday.
Although police have not released details of how the collision occurred, witnesses have told the Cambrian News that the car was driven through one bollard at the southern end of the pedestrian concourse area before ploughing into the unsuspecting man and his son.
The car is then understood to have exited the northern end of the concourse area after smashing through two further bollards before colliding with two cars and coming to a stop approximately 20 metres down the road, near the exit to the car park.
Four police cars, three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, an air ambulance and a fire engine attended the incident. Police have confirmed the father and son’s injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
Witness Betty Jones, who was just feet away when the accident happened, told the Cambrian News she was left in tears after realising two people had been hurt.
Mrs Jones said: “I thought it was a bomb. I heard a big bang. I saw a boy. His father had been knocked down.
"The little boy was crying. You could hear it from afar.”
