The Attic Players, of Newcastle Emlyn, present their winter production Foolish Fishgirls and The Pearl, a gentle family comedy about mermaids, love and lost treasure, later this month.

The play is set in Sea Hags, a seaside B&B and café run by two sisters, Oceana and Coral.

Alas, times are hard and the B&B has seen better days. It is a cold, miserable day in early January and the weather forecast is for a major storm to hit, bringing with it snow and high winds.

“What a way to start the new year,” quips Coral, “flat broke and snowbound.” But things are about to get just a little bit more interesting.

A coastguard by the name of Nathan claims to have been saved from drowning by a mermaid! By an odd twist of fate, he ends up in the B&B needing a room for the night when he gets stranded by the blizzard.

Here he meets a regular customer by the name of Floyd who has his own mermaid tale to tell.

Add in the appearance of the very mermaid who saved Nathan’s life and the revelation of just a couple of other well-hidden secrets, and the play rolls along, at times anarchically, to a happy but perhaps unpredictable end.

To accompany the play, the audience are invited to enjoy an immersive experience, including some festive fare with mince pies and mulled wine being served by members of the Sea Hags café.

And please make sure your children enter the colouring competition to win a share of the mermaid’s treasure. To round off the performances, a resident DJ will be providing a suitable musical backdrop to the proceedings.

The show is on from 28 November to 1 December. Doors open at 7pm each evening and there is a matinee on 1 December at 2pm.
