Aberystwyth and District Floral Society
AT THE July meeting, members and friends of the club enjoyed a workshop with Jacqui Cooper from Stafford, who is a National Association of Flower Arrangers (NAFAS) demonstrator and tutor who has previously visited the group. It was an excellent evening and members all learnt a lot.
She started by talking about contemporary work and how it is interpreted. She then went on to demonstrate how to decorate an oasis sphere with fresh plant materials and embellishments and use it as a container by adding a test tube. This was followed by a demonstration on how to make a free-flowing arrangement using a half-oasis wreath and adding garden flowers and foliage.
Jacqui then went around the designs giving feedback and compliments on each design in turn. Pat Jones gave the vote of thanks and wished Jacqui well and hoped to see her again in the society programme in the near future. Refreshments were provided throughout the evening and many thanks go to Sylvia Morgan and friend for providing them.
In July, members and friends were also treated to a trip to Pugh’s Garden Centre, Radyr, and lunch nearby, and then on to the floral wholesalers to top up on their supplies. It was agreed by all that it had been a very enjoyable day out and thanks go to Beti Wyn and Brian Davies for organising the trip and driving the group respectively.
The next club evening is on 20 September when Delyth Price from Carmarthenshire demonstrates ‘A Night at the Musicals’.
Delyth has recently won many prizes at the Royal Welsh Show as well as other national shows.
Cambrian Floral Society
JULY proved to be a busy month for the society. On Wednesday, 6 July, on a rare sunny day, they had a garden visit to an artists’s home at Ty’n Twll, near Dolgellau.
A pleasant warm afternoon was spent wandering through this interesting garden hidden in the hills of Meirioneth, after which they enjoyed a cream tea in the grounds and browsed through some of the artist’s own wildlife cards. From 21 to 23 July they held a flower festival at Bethel Baptist Chapel, Baker Street, and a Cymanfa Ganu on Sunday evening, 24 July.
The chairman, John James, introduced the conductor, Vernon Maher; the organist, Bryan Jones; and the soloists, Gwynne Jones and Glesni Haf Morris. The president for the evening was Ann Mason Davies who gave a short address before Rev Peter Thomas gave the blessing at the end of the service.
The proceeds from this event will be shared between the Welsh Air Ambulance and Diabetic Unit at Bronglais Hospital, and a presentation will be made prior to the meeting on Wednesday, 7 September. The society recommences their programme for the year at 7pm on Wednesday, 7 September, at Bethel Chapel Vestry, Baker Street.
The evening will be in the hands of their chairman who will give an introduction to flower arranging together with a demonstration.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith auction
AN AUCTION will kick off a week of fund-raising by campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Llety Parc on Friday, 9 September, with personal experience leading to donating half the proceeds to Mind in Aberystwyth.
Hawys Roberts, the auction organiser and vice-chair of Cymdeithas in Ceredigion, talking of her experience of suffering with post-natal depression following the birth of her second daughter, said: “The months following Beca’s birth were very difficult. I felt hopeless, frustrated and full of guilt.
“I feel there is a lack of understanding of mental health in general, and Mind does very valuable work in the community to reach out to people in need of help.
“People won’t go out of their way to ask for healthcare in Welsh, all they want is to have their treatment and get well.
“That’s especially true with mental health services – the ability to talk and get information about mental health is so important, but so rare at present. Mind will be able to use the money to develop their resources in Welsh.”
Hawys added: “We been very lucky to have local people and businesses’ support – almost all the lots have been donated locally.
“Wyn Mel has contributed a picture, the Farmers’ in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn have donated a Sunday lunch for two, Bridget James has contributed fitness sessions, there’s a cake for a special occasion by local cake artist, Megan Walton, and a host of other prizes – there’s a full list on our website.”
Half the auction’s proceeds will go to Mind Aberystwyth.

It is a work which has not been sung by the society before, and in recent weeks Cerdd Ystwyth Music in Upper Portland Street, has seen a goodly number of choristers visiting the shop and purchasing their own copies of this challenging work.
