An Aberystwyth Street, which was closed due to the pedestrianisation of the town, has been fully reopened, after a resident claimed their street had become “like the M4”.

Castle Street was part of the pedestrian safe zone in Aberystwyth which was implemented on 13 July.

The safe zone has been created by stopping cars, except those who have permission, driving within the safe zone between 11am and 6pm daily and by stopping on-street parking.

But the road has now been reopened to relieve traffic congestion.

One local resident was happy to see the road reopened: “Our street has been like the M4.

“It takes forever to get along the promenade because cars park along south prom, making it one way, so there’s a line of traffic starting at the hut and another starting at Castle Point.

“No-one can move!”

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “The change was made in response to request from property owners who wanted to access garages situated along that street and to comments from the Coastguard.

“In addition, an earlier change to allow traffic along St James Square caused more traffic to drive down the narrow roads alongside the Assembly Rooms on to Laura Place so allowing traffic to head straight down Castle Street will relieve that pressure.”
