Cadets from 561 (Ardwyn, Aberystwyth & District) Squadron, RAF Air Cadets are celebrating a very successful week.

In a ceremony last Thursday in Carmarthen, the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, Sara Edwards, presented Cadet Flight Sergeant Luke Webbon-Thomas with his badge of office as a newly appointed Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for 2019.

In the same ceremony in Carmarthen, Cadet Flight Sergeant Carwyn Lloyd-Jones received his certificate of appointment for 2018.

This marks a first for 561 Squadron, having cadets selected for appointment in consecutive years.

Luke is a sixth-form pupil at Ysgol Penglais in Aberystwyth and his appointment culminates a very successful year for him, one in which he was selected to attend the National Aerospace and Cyprus camps, which were part of the RAF 100 celebrations, and a two-week pilot scholarship.

Sergeant Eifion Parry, Officer Commanding 561 Squadron, said: “Flight Sergeants Lloyd-Jones and Webbon-Thomas are both extremely hard-working and dedicated cadets, who give up most of their time to instruct younger cadets.

“They have both been instrumental in developing the squadron’s flight simulator and training cadets in the fundamentals of flight.

“They both strive to attend all activities within the squadron and community. It was easy to recommend these cadets for this prestigious appointment.”

To crown a successful week, cadets of 561 Squadron came second at the No 3 Welsh Wing Orienteering Competition at Afan Argoed country park.
