Madam,

I support the provision of lifeguards at most popular Gwynedd beaches, but it is not quite as simple as the county council installing RNLI ones.

The most onerous job for each location would be an administrator/organiser, but they would need a team of lifeguards of considerable number if voluntary and doing it between their day jobs, even if only for the six-week ‘high season’.

They would also need a base to shelter and store equipment.

It could be best done as a sub-group of some existing local charitable organisation.

Sadly the lack of enthusiasm for taking on potential ‘responsibility’ and legal liabilities is resulting in a lack of mitigation of the liabilities of unguarded beaches.

The group that takes on a beach and increases safety cannot be denigrated or held to account if they fail to cover all times adequately; they will at least have done more than nothing!

Yours etc, David Church, Brynhyfryd Road, Tywyn.
