A MERMAID made entirely of rubbish found on local beaches has proven a stark reminder of man’s effect on the environment.

‘Shelly’, a construct created by Cambrian Beach Guardians, was presented to the public in Barmouth at the start of the Three Peaks Yacht Race.

The mermaid was joined on the day by a dolphin which was also comprised of marine waste.

Speaking after the launch, a Cambrian Beach Guardian representative said: “Well what a fantastic day, Shelly did us proud!

“Lots of conversations, selfies, donations and a couple of beach cleans done for us by a family and a wonderful group of school children on holiday from Birmingham.

“Nice to meet so many already following us and hearing what people are doing to make a difference to our beaches and oceans.

“See you at the Paddlesports festival at the end of the month.

“Thanks too to Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor for their amazing talented art Student Georgia Rose for doing Shelly’s make up.”
