We are the owners of 9 Cambrian Place and hence we also own the covered part of the alley which leads to the back of the houses on Union Street and Alexandra Road. Over the years we have been plagued by the problems of rubbish being put there and most especially of residents from the other streets putting their black bags, recycling bags, food bins and bottle boxes in the alleyway. This creates a health hazard as many of the bags are broken into by vermin, and also blocks the right of way.
The operatives work very hard but are not supposed to enter the alley and the mess that ensues for the poor man who follows round with the machine to clean up is dreadful. We are leaf letting the residents to remind them that their bags etc should be outside their own properties, i.e. on the street in Union Street and Alexandra Road.
Recently there was also a microwave dumped there, followed by a mattress which was then set alight causing huge danger to life and properties. The situation is worse since the three-weekly pick-up of black bags.
The council has attached a strong black bag to our property (without asking permission!) but this is not being used and the operatives tell us that these bags are not helpful even if they are used as they have to reach in to retrieve each bag. Is it not time that the council realised that the best solution would be to roll out wheelie bins in town? We have issued one to our tenants for their black bags. Until this is done for all properties, we can only see a continuing situation of scattered garbage down the alley – a significant health hazard.
There seems to be no monitoring of this by the council despite several requests from us to remove items over the years.
Having perused the council website I see some excellent guidance there to residents and students – but how many of these tenants actually go online to seek this? Could a leaflet be sent with the council tax assessment when new tenants takeover?
We would welcome any moves the council could make to alleviate this problem for us personally but also for the town.We expect a rise in council tax – please respect us by giving a better service
