CAMBRIAN News managing editor Bev Thomas has smashed through her 100km target to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK in memory of her dad - so has set herself a new challenge.
Her pledge was part of the Running Down Dementia challenge organised by the charity to raise vital funds for dementia research.
Having completed the 100km - which is just over 60 miles - Bev has now decided to aim for 200km to try to raise even more money for the charity.
Bev said: “I set myself the the challenge in memory of my lovely dad, David James, of Penrhyncoch, who recently passed away, aged 90, after a brave battle with the cruellest of illnesses, dementia.
“I have been pounding my miles on the treadmill at inclines of up to 35 per cent. Walking on the flat would be far too easy!
“It is helping me to get fit while paying tribute to my dad and raising funds for such important research.”
The 100km Running Down Dementia challenge runs until the end of August.
So, having completed her 100km by the middle of July, Bev has decided to carry on.
“I have raised over £350 so far thanks to the generosity of family, friends and supporters,” she said.
“In a bid to raise even more cash, I have decided to try to complete 200km by the deadline.
“I am at 125km, so need to complete another 75km in just five weeks.
“It has not been easy in this scorching weather - but memories of my dad and the fundraising cause have kept me going.”
Right now 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia. Around every one of those people are friends and family, often struggling to keep life on track themselves.
Bev has in recent years raised £5,500 for the British Heart Foundation by running the London Marathon and £5,000 for Bronglais Cardiac Unit.
