TO celebrate National Boccia Day, Dementia Actif Gwynedd organised a ‘Boccia is Back’ competition.

Boccia is a target game requiring players to throw as many of their balls as close to a target as possible.

Because of Covid-19, it wasn’t possible to bring teams together to compete. However, the team came up with an innovative solution.

Emma Quaeck, manager of Dementia Actif Gwynedd said: “We wanted to do something special to mark National Boccia Day this year and to continue doing our best to support and encourage physical activity during such difficult times.

“So we created a boccia competition whereby players could compete from their individual venue or care home, and all the scores from the various teams across Gwynedd were then submitted and compared.

“Ninety-two players took part, with eight teams competing in the Gwynedd Council residential homes competition and 24 teams taking part in the community classes competition.

“A big congratulations to Team Garn from Plas Hafan who were the winners of the residential homes competition, and to the Pwllheli Rollers from the Dwyfor Dementia Actif group who won the community competition.

“Well done to everyone who took part in the competition. I’m sure everyone had great fun competing.”

Councillor Dafydd Meurig, cabinet member for adults, health and wellbeing, added: “We know that the period continues to be a very difficult one, so it’s fantastic to see how the Dementia Actif Gwynedd team have effectively adapted to the situation and I congratulate them for all for their hard work and their dedication.”

Dementia Actif Gwynedd is a physical activity program for people living with dementia.
