A BRAVE 12-year-old Llanarth boy has taken part in an inspirational sailing trip with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, along with 26 other young people in recovery from cancer.

Jamie Roberts joined the crew of one of five yachts, to sail around the Solent on the south coast on a four-day yachting adventure.

For Jamie, who finished cancer treatment in June for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, this was his first time sailing with the Trust.

He said: “I didn’t know any of the people on my boat before I came here, I didn’t know any of their names or anything but now I think we’ve become good friends.”

Sailing on board 42 to 48-foot cruising yachts, the Trust trips provide a chance for 27 young people to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to work as a team and get involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking.

Jamie said: “I’ve learnt a few knots, all about sailing and the area around the island. I’m usually inside a lot, I have loads to do where I live, but I don’t really use it enough but I think this trip has probably helped me with that and will get me outside more.”
