A Gwynedd cheese factory that went into administration earlier this summer has left a trail of debt behind it, owing millions to various parties including employees and other businesses.

Over 80 jobs were lost at GRH Food Company, located in Minffordd between Penrhyndeudraeth and Porthmadog, when administrators were called in June.

This came just two years after the firm received a £1.7m Welsh Government grant to relocate to a new £6.5m headquarters.

Companies House has now released a statement of affairs – an overview of the company’s assets and liabilities - which reveals that GRH owes an estimate of £4m to unsecured creditors, including other traders and employees of the company.

This is combined with a further unpaid tax bill of £149,089.

The Welsh Government is intending to pursue the recovery of the debts owed it.

GRH’s assets can be cashed in but are unlikely to be able to pay off these liabilities; a total of £317,260 is expected to be available for unsecured creditors but this will still leave a deficit of around £3.7m for the company to owe.

Twenty-eight other north Wales firms are likely to be directly affected by the debt owed by GRH.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “The Welsh Government is seeking full recovery of all funds owed by GRH Food Company Limited, and we continue to exhaust every avenue in the pursuit of the debts owed to us.”

The creditor claim submitted on behalf of the Welsh ministers totalled £1,698,043.23.
