Confusion over what supermarkets can and can’t sell during this lockdown has highlighted the importance of "building public trust in Covid measures", Plaid Cymru has said.

The party was responding to new guidance given to supermarkets yesterday on what they can sell during the firebreak lockdown.

Plaid’s shadow health minister Rhun ap Iorwerth MS says "building public trust in Covid measures is vital”, after the ’essential items only’ rule caused confusion.

The Welsh Government announced yesterday that items including baby clothes, stationery and sanitary products are all permitted as essential items, following confusion and complaints.

The list of permitted items released yesterday includes:

• Food and drink

• Products ancillary to the sale of food and drink, primarily disposable items used for the preparation and storage of food (such as kitchen foil, food bags and cling film) but also basic products necessary to prepare and eat food and drink

• Toiletries and cosmetic products, including toilets rolls and sanitary products

• Pharmaceutical products

• Baby products including equipment, clothes, and nappies

• Stationery and greetings cards

• Pet food and other pet supplies

• Products for the maintenance of bicycles and cars

Mr ap Iorwerth said: “This really has been a reminder to government that building public trust in Covid measures is vital.

"Steps they take not only have to be effective, they have to be seen to be proportionate and communicated as such.

"The last thing government wants to do is to create resentment in public health measures.”
