BAKERY giants Greggs have announced that their Lampeter branch will not be re-opening following the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a terse statement released on Friday, the company said: “Due to our lease coming to an end, we are no longer operating from our Lampeter shop."
It was not immediately clear how many jobs are affected.
The shop hit the headlines in November 2017 when a worker was suspended after allegedly telling a customer who ordered in Welsh that the language sounded "like Tourette’s".
Sioned Howells, 18, tweeted that the employee said: "That was Welsh?? Sounded more like you had Tourettes to me."
Greggs said they were ’deeply sorry" for any offence caused and were investigating further.
Lampeter county councillor Hag Harris said this week it had come as ’a great surprise’ to learn that Greggs had announced they would be closing their High Street shop.
“The shop has not been open since the onset of lockdown whilst the other two bakers have remained open and other food outlets also trading,” he said.
“What the reasons are I do not know. Perhaps this outlet’s turnover had not come up to Greggs’ expectations?
“No one is happy to see any business closing in our town and our first thoughts must be with the staff who were always cheerful and friendly.
“I only hope that this sad news is not a harbinger of further closures as we are all aware of the financial pressures affecting many retail businesses."
