An Aberystwyth councillor has welcomed news that restrictions on cafés serving drinks on the promenade have been lifted.

Last week it was announced that cafés, pubs and restaurants are to be allowed to sell food and drink on Aberystwyth’s promenade after conditions of a new lease were agreed between the owners of PD’s Diner and the county council.

Cllr Mark Strong, whose ward covers part of the affected area of the prom, said: “I am very pleased that this matter has now been resolved.

“It is unfortunate that it took so long, however, it’s important to look to the future to make sure that the fullest economic potential and leisure potential of the promenade is fulfilled.

“There are of course major plans afoot to improve the promenade with new sea defences and that is meant to include substantial improvements to the potential of the promenade.

“If these are done successfully then the future should be looking much better for the seafront in Aberystwyth.”

The council has been criticised over the terms of the lease which stopped other businesses from trading on the entire length of the promenade between the pier and Constitution Hill.

A petition was launched by Electra MotoGear, which wanted to have tables on the promenade but was banned from doing so.

A spokesperson told the Cambrian News last week that they were also delighted that the 23-year-old restriction had been lifted and that the decision would benefit many businesses, local events and charities who can now use the prom more effectively.
