Madam,

Referring to Cllr Hughes’ letter last week, our group SLVSSB has always supported the airfield access road. The economic value, job-creation opportunities, tourist access to the vast expanses of Shell Island and the airfield, congestion reducing and general potential for the future are immense.

As we pointed out, and we are alone in doing so, the access roadworks will be vital to save the village from the surf which will otherwise soon pound the main street, according to official forecasts. So we agree with her.

Our objection is still only to the £12m “southern bypass to nowhere”, as it has been throughout this two-year battle.

Cllr Hughes is right in that the subject is awash with rumours – the latest that the Snowdonia Authority has blocked it – and shrouded in uncertainty. This is immensely damag-ing for commercial and industrial development. Hence our pressure for answers under the Freedom of Information Act, so far ignored by Gwynedd Council.

What will be, for example, the diesel contamination, the carcinogens, and the environmental effects? What will it cost? What does the rest of Gwynedd feel about wasting £12m on a road which will be obsolete before it is finished? Have they at last done the sums?

Cllr Hughes might do well to get these questions answered.

Yours etc,

Graham Tottle, Maes Artro, Llanbedr.
