A CAGE fighter is working on becoming the “best in the world” - with six-mile runs at 4am.
Danny Williams, 26, is currently training hard for a title bout for the UK Fighting Championship lightweight title at Preston Guild hall on 10 March.
The former Glan y Môr student, who lives in Pwllheli, is in the best shape of his life preparing for his Mixed Martial Arts fights against his opponent Saqib Khan of Burnley in the fight for the UK title.
Danny has been fighting for the past four years and has participated in 25 bouts and has a gruelling regime to keeping him fighting fit.
“A typical day of training for me is a six-mile run at 4am in the morning, then breakfast, returning to the gym and hitting a strength, plyometric and muscle endurance workout,” he said.
“Like Mike Tyson said, 4am starts give me an edge on my opponent, I know he’s sleeping!
“I then refuel with good, nutritious food all afternoon before hitting a two-hour MMA class working on Muay Thai, wrestling and Brazilian jiu jitsu.
“After class I like to relax in the sauna/jacuzzi to try and recover for the next morning session.
“It’s like this six days a week. A lot of people ask me how I do it and I say it easy when you enjoy it.
“I believe I can be the best in the world and that’s what I’m working towards.”
Danny chose MMA as he enjoys mastering different techniques and disciplines, and using knees, elbows and kicks to beat his opposition.
He spends his six days a week training at his own facility in the heart of Pwllheli, paid for by supporters and sponsors.
“I started the gym myself, it’s located at the basement of the church on Penlan Street,” he added.
“I have a large matted area here with various types of punchbags and a caged-off area where behind you’ll find a fully-functional strength and conditioning gym.
“It still needs work for the facility to be complete.
“Thankfully many independent sponsors have kindly donated money for me to purchase equipment and matting.
“Many people here in the community support what I’m trying to achieve here. I’m very grateful for everything they’ve done for me so far.”
Danny, who first took an interest in combative sport after watching his aunt achieve her black belt in kick boxing, feels ready for his big fight.
“I’m feeling confident about my upcoming fight. There’s lot of hard work left to do over the next weeks but I feel come fight day my style will beat my opponents and I’ve visualised holding that belt in front of my supporting crowd come 10 March,” he added.
“I’d like to thank everyone following and supporting - it makes training all the more enjoyable - my family and close friends for understanding the commitment this sport requires, all my teammates from MFA and HAMMA St Helens and a big thank you to my head coach Sean Martin and Andy De Vent.”
