A GWYNEDD councillor has called for a 40mph limit on one of the region’s most dangerous roads following a fatal crash over the weekend.

Last Sunday a 50-year-old motorcyclist from Cheshire was pronounced dead on the scene after a horror smash involving a Yamaha motorcycle and a number of other vehicles.

John Anthony Bennett, 51, of Weaverham, died following the collision, on the A496 between Dolgellau and Barmouth - just weeks after a Llanelltyd community councillor called for further traffic measures on the notorious road.

In the Cambrian News edition 14 April, Cllr Janet Edwards called for “real changes” before somebody else lost their life.

While there is no suggestion that speed was a factor in the fatal crash, her fears have now been realised.

Her campaign has been backed by county councillors. Cllr Peredur Jenkins, who represents the region, said that the concerns had been raised by the local community council several times and new safety road markings had been placed at various parts of the A496.

“It is evident that the new road markings have not worked and this has been endorsed by the local community council who say that vehicles and motorcyclists are still travelling too fast,” said Cllr Jenkins.

“Maybe what is needed is a speed restrictions of 40mph on the A496 like there is on many other roads leading into Wales.”

Senior coroner for North West Wales Dewi Pritchard-Jones confirmed this week that an investigation has been opened and adjourned.
