CEREDIGION councillors have backed a motion calling on the Welsh Government to undertake an “urgent review” into how to improve safety on the county’s major roads.

The council will write to the Welsh Government to call for improvements to be made to the A487 and the A44 to make “overtaking safer” to reduce the number of fatalities and serious accidents on the county’s roads.

The A44, which was added to the original notice of motion at a meeting last Thursday, has been dubbed one of the most dangerous roads in Britain, while the A487 has seen a number of serious crashes over the last five years.

Cllr Maldwyn Lewis, who proposed the motion, told members: “I put forward this motion for all those who have lost loved ones on the A487.

“While we are thankful for past improvements, we have all experienced slow-moving traffic and frustration of having nowhere safe to overtake.

“It leads to people taking risks to overtake on corners or on double white lines with poor visibility resulting in meeting oncoming vehicles.

“I firmly believe that designing roads with overtaking lanes at certain points along the road would greatly improve matters.

“There are many junctions and sections of the road where safety concerns have been highlighted.

“I plead to the Welsh Government to hear our call"
