THERE are calls for bins to be installed at a popular Aberystwyth beach which has a “prolific” problem with dog fouling.
Aberystwyth University graduate Naomi Davis claims the problem of dog fouling, including dog walkers who bag their dog’s waste and discard it, at Tan-y-bwlch beach, is the worst she has ever seen.
“I’ve never seen a dog waste problem so bad,” Miss Davis, who studied animal behaviour at university and now works part-time at Ynyshir RSPB nature reserve, told the Cambrian News this week.
“I find myself cleaning up rubbish from the beach anyway, but the dog mess is prolific. Bagged, unbagged, it’s everywhere.”
And Miss Davis said she has seen some “creative” methods employed by dog walkers to dispose of dog waste, short of binning it.
“I’ve even seen dog poo cairns; creative but not a real solution,” she said.
“There’s a council sign asking people to dispose of their waste but no actual bin specifically for dog mess; there’s only one general waste bin for the length of the entire beach.
“I’ve seen barrels and crates for people to put beach rubbish in up and down the path.
“People want to tidy up but short of bagging it up and taking it home yourself there’s no alternative."
But the council has told the Cambrian News this week that it has “no intention” of providing any more bins at the beach, and said the responsibility for dealing with the problem “rests solely” with the dogs’ owners.
