THERE are calls this week for the county council to prosecute fly-tippers after rubbish was dumped on a town centre green twice within the space of a week.

David Kirby, a member of the Greener Aberystwyth Group, told the Cambrian News that the waste, including a large mattress and bags of carpet off-cuts, was dumped on ‘Coopers Corner’, an area of green between North Road, Infirmary Road and Penglais Road, on two occasions between Monday, 22 and Monday, 29 May.

Mr Kirby said he had collected evidence from the first incident of fly-tipping which could lead to the identification of the culprits — a diary apparently belonging to a university student — and has called on Ceredigion County Council to take action.

The first incident, which was discovered on Monday, 22 May, included a mattress and bedding, a microwave box, plants, ornaments and a council food recycling container.

And the second incident, discovered by Mr Kirby on Bank Holiday Monday, included carpet off-cuts in council recycling bags, a Seat car radiator grill, clothing, and empty take-away food containers.

All of the waste was dumped next to a council bin on the green, and Mr Kirby has linked the incidents to the end of the university term.

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “Ceredigion County Council’s consideration of the various matters arising is currently ongoing.”

Cllr Mark Strong, who told the Cambrian News’ Keep Aber Tidy campaign before he was re-elected on 4 May that he would push for more fines and prosecutions “if the people could be caught”, said he would support prosecution in this case, but sympathised with the council’s financial position.
