FRESH calls have been made for a busy street in Pwllheli to be made one-way after a “chaotic” bank holiday weekend.

Businesses and town councillors have been campaigning for Gaol Street in the town to have a one-way system for a number of years following concerns over the dangerous conditions for pedestrians as cars mount the pavements to try and pass each other on the street.

Two public exhibitions have been held for residents to discuss ways to ease traffic in the town.

Cllr Jonathan Roberts of Pwllheli Town Council, who is one of those who are campaigning for a one-way system, says he has witnessed complete “chaos” over the bank holiday weekend.

He said: “It’s been really busy in the town over the weekend. At times it has been utter chaos on Gaol Street.

“I will be putting a proposal to the town council on Thursday to ask them to ask Gwynedd Council to once again consider the one-way system. Gwynedd Council should take notice of this as so many people are in favour of it.”

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “We accept the concerns regarding traffic flow along Gaol Street in Pwllheli and officers from the council’s transportation and street care service have been in discussions with representatives from Pwllheli Town Council for some time regarding the matter."
