Ysgol Penweddig pupils calling for a safe crossing on a “chaotic road” on the way to the school have moved a step closer to seeing the plan come to fruition after ministers announced that a “detailed assessment” would take place before April.

Tom Kendall, along with other pupils at Penweddig, gathered over 300 signatures from pupils and residents near the Aberystwyth school last year, calling for a crossing, and said they have had “good support” for the campaign.

They also received the support of Ceredigion’s MP and AM, and local county council member Cllr Paul James, who has called for increased road safety in the area for a number of years.

In March last year, Economy and Infrastructure Minister Ken Skates confirmed that a 20mph speed limit will be introduced in the area of the school and added that the Welsh Government would “consider a study into the feasibility of providing a crossing at this location”.

In a fresh letter to campaigners, Mr Skates said that a study would now be undertaken.

“The recommendation from the pedestrian crossing assessment report is to carry out a detailed assessment for a zebra crossing,” he wrote in a letter to Ceredigion AM Elin Jones.

“This work will take place in this financial year.”

Mr Skates added that any scheme decided upon “will be subject to funding and competing priorities with similar schemes across Wales”.

Tom told the Cambrian News that the letter was “great news”.

“The effort to collect 400 signatures to get a crossing has paid off,” he said.

“It is often very unsafe getting to and from Penweddig and we are worried that an accident will happen.

“Lots of people we spoke to feel the same way.”
