A HARLECH teacher has spoken of her family’s hopes that her seriously ill brother-in-law will be back home in the New Year.

The head of science at Ysgol Ardudwy, Sara Edwards received the sad news at the beginning of the year that her brother-in-law, Carwyn Edwards, 39, was suffering from Infective Endocarditis, which is a bacterial infection in the blood that settled on his mitral heart valve.

Mr Edwards, who has been living in Phoenix, Arizona, for the past 13 years, needed to have his left leg amputated above the knee and lost part of his lower leg because of the infection. He works for health insurance company, Cigna, who have been paying for his health benefits.

However, at the beginning of September Cigna informed Mr Edwards that they would stop his medical benefits from 12 September.

His family were outraged by this news and Sara’s husband, Aled, immediately flew out to America to speak to the insurance company.

Thankfully Cigna has now agreed to continue paying Mr Edwards’ medical costs for 60 more days.

Sara said the family are relieved that the insurance company have now agreed to pay for her brother-in-laws treatment.

She said: “We were completely shocked when we heard that the insurance company was going to stop paying for Carwyn’s treatment.

“Aled had to go over to speak to them and thankfully now they have agreed to pay for another 60 days and for the extra skilled nursing that is needed.

“There is an end goal now to it all and Carwyn is getting stronger and has put weight on which is good news.

“We are hopeful after the 60 days has ended we can look into ways to getting Carwyn back home.”
