DEMANDS have been made for a pelican crossing on one of the Llyn’s busiest roads to improve safety for schoolchildren.

Youngsters still do not feel safe crossing the A499 in Pontllyfni, despite the recent installation of new traffic-calming measures, it has been claimed.

Parents have expressed their concerns, saying although there’s now a chevron island in the middle of the road, it is “impossible” to fit both a pram and its operator on the island at the same time, leaving the parent uncomfortably close to the 40mph traffic.

Cllr Owain Williams, who represents the village, welcomed the new safety measures but believes they do not go far enough.

“It’s very important for me to make sure that traffic takes its time passing through my ward, especially in the morning and afternoon when children are gathering to go to and from school,” he said.

“It is a deadly road, it has been some 30 years but two people have died here. We must do everything we can to stop anything like that happening again."

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Officers from the council’s Transportation Service have considered a request for traffic lights in the area.

“Having visited and assessed the site, the level of pedestrians and traffic flows do not currently warrant the installation of traffic lights.”
