A NEW Quay mum-of-two has told how her family were intimidated by a drunken group of Bow Street men who stole an England flag flying outside their property on Saturday night.

Teaching assistant Charleen Muggridge said she was forced to ring police because of the behaviour of a large group waiting for a bus outside her house in Queen’s Street, New Quay.

She said that stones were thrown at windows before one of the men tore down a St George’s flag the family had put up showing their support for the England football team during the World Cup.

It later emerged that the group consisted of some players and supporters of Mid Wales League football club Bow Street FC who had been socialising in the town.

“My children are traumatised over this and it’s bang out of order,” said Ms Muggridge.

“What I find inexcusable is that those guys took that flag after [her partner] Stewart explained they’d upset the kids in the house.

“Bailey is a member of New Quay Juniors and football-mad – but since this happened he’s not been sleeping in his own bedroom ‘in case the bad men come back’.”

Speaking to the Cambrian News on Monday, Ms Muggridge said: “We’re the type of people who don’t mind banter, but this went way beyond that.

“Stewart and Bailey were watching World Cup football on the sofa when those stones struck that window – if it had broken they’d have been showered with glass."

Bow Street FC posted this statement on its Facebook page last night: "Bow Street FC would like to unreservedly apologise for any inappropriate behaviour during a club trip to New Quay on Saturday which included, but was not limited to, members of the first team squad.

"Although the club's chairman has only just been brought up to speed due to family reasons, other leading club officials made immediate private contact with the family involved upon being alerted to the serious allegations.

"We can assure the family that a full inquiry will be taking place in the near future, and those involved in any in appropriate behaviour will be severely reprimanded and reminded of their obligations and responsibilities whilst representing Bow Street Football Club and to themselves as individuals. We are glad to note that these individuals have already issued private apologies.

"Pending the results of its investigations, Bow Street FC will use its best endeavours to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future, in keeping with its proud history and previously unblemished relationship with the town of New Quay and its football club."
