A PETITION started by Cllr Bryan Davies, following Ceredigion County Council Cabinet’s decision to launch a consultation on the future of Rhydeinon Household Waste Site, has gathered the support of over 1,000 signatories since it was launched in June.
The current contract for the household waste site near Llanarth has been extended to November to allow the council time to consider future options for the site.
Rhydeinon is one of four household waste sites in the county; the others are situated in the more urban settings of Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Lampeter.
The Cabinet decision follows a review of waste management infrastructure in the county, as part of the council’s Waste Management Strategy for 2014-18.
Earlier this month, Cllr Davies presented the petition to Sue Darnbrook, corporate director at the council, to be included as part of the public consultation on the future of the waste site that will be discussed by the council Cabinet in mid September.
Cllr Davies said: “The response to this petition has been overwhelming, and it shows how vital and highly regarded this facility is to the rural communities of mid Ceredigion.
“Ceredigion has been leading the way in terms of recycling in Wales over the past few years, and the outright closure of this centrally located household waste site would be a significant step back.
“It could discourage recycling, and potentially lead to more illegal fly-tipping in the area.”
