IN A colourful ceremony in Pontio in Bangor, Prof Siân Hope was installed as high sheriff of Gwynedd.

This ancient post has been in existence for over 1,000 years, but women have been appointed only in the last 40 years.

Prof Hope, director of strategic initiatives and Prof of computer science, said: “I am delighted and honoured to hold the office of High Sheriff. My theme for the year will be education as a route out of difficulty and towards success.

“I am particularly keen to promote the ‘Profi’ project, a learning and mentoring programme, which began at Pontio, which challenges young people to tackle issues facing their communities.

“I will also encourage fundraising for Crimebeat, the High Sheriffs’ youth crime prevention charity, and the Prince’s Trust.”

Siân will be assisted by Gwilym Owen of the School of Law, who was appointed as under sheriff, and by Dean Kathy Jones of Bangor Cathedral, who will serve as her chaplain.
