Community groups in Machynlleth will be able to make use of a new council facility after renovation work at a former shop was completed.

The Old Shop on Machynlleth’s Bryn y Gôg housing estate has been the subject of work to repair water damage, with Powys County Council now planning to use the renovated building as an office for the authority’s housing service, as well as providing a facility for community groups.

The Old Shop will be officially opened by long-serving Machynlleth county councillor Michael Williams tomorrow.

The housing service will be able to use the facility as an office and base for meetings on a regular basis, with other council services, as well as public sector organisations, local businesses and community groups able to book the office for free if they require a meeting room.

Cllr James Evans, the Cabinet member for housing, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to bring The Old Shop on Bryn y Gôg back into use.

“Not only will it be used by our housing service as an office and a base to meet with our tenants on a regular basis, it will also be open to other organisations and community groups for them to use for free.

“I hope that this office will become a multi-functional and well-used hub for Machynlleth.”

The shop had suffered water damage in recent years to the roof and floor, but has now been renovated and decorated.
