THE next talk on the society’s winter calendar on 20 November at 7.30pm in Tabernacl vestry is the strange tale of ‘The Killing of the Pig’ during the war which resulted in a judicial inquiry into the conduct of a local bench of magistrates.

Richard Jones, a man with strong links to Aberaeron will explain all.

Bridge club

JEN Harris and Ted Morgan were joint winners with Mike Jones and John Valentine on 8 November.

Nigel Symons Jones and Herbie Rowley were joint third with Mair Harrison and Christine Dennis.

The club plays in the Thursday heat of the Children in Need simultaneous competition on 15 November.

The club meets in the Royal British Legion Hall each Thursday at 6.40pm – newcomers welcomed.

Afternoon tuition for beginners and improvers is being held on Wednesdays starting at 1pm in the Royal British Legion Hall.

Last week the improvers were shown the value of singletons and voids in bidding games and slams.

Using splinter bids to identify a singleton or void opposite partner’s low losing cards, slams may be explored with only 26 points between the partnership.

Afternoon bridge sessions for players at all levels will be held in the Royal British Legion Hall on Wednesdays 1pm to 4pm.

Welsh woven colour

The colours of Aberaeron and the sea are the inspiration for an unusual display in the town.

The brightly coloured handwoven contemporary rugs designed and made by Vicky Ellis, pictured right, who lives near Aberaeron, reflect influences as diverse as traditional Welsh weave patterns and the Bauhaus movement of the ‘20s and ‘30s.

Vicky, who has been a rug weaver for over 30 years, was on the point of hanging up her shuttles and selling her loom because it was taking up so much space, when her granddaughter asked her to teach her to weave. From that point on she got hooked on weaving again, and decided to create a new series of rugs.

The display features 20 individually designed rugs, each one named after boats, houses or sites around the town. People are welcome to browse the rugs which can be seen until 8 December at Norris Carpets, The Old Chapel, Aberaeron, Mondays to Fridays 10am - 4pm and Saturdays 10am - 1pm.
