PRESIDENT Eleanor Evans welcomed everyonr to the February meeting. All the business matters were discussed and voting on this year’s resolutions was carried out. Venues for trips were discussed before refreshments were taken. Eleanor then welcomed the speaker, Patricia Hoare, who has recently retired from the Aberystwyth branch of the Samaritans. She gave a history of the Samaritans and how it was founded by Chad Varah in 1954 and how it is run. All volunteers go through training before starting to take calls, and there are always two volunteers on duty at a time. Members then worked through a scenario and discussed their reasons for their choice, which were many and varied, giving more chance for discussion. Sally Tilley gave the vote of thanks for such an interesting and thought-provoking evening. The raffle was won by Anne Williams, and the competition for a snowy photograph was won by Ann Jackson. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 6 March, when they have their annual St David’s Day cawl evening held at Aberaeron Sports Club.

‘THE Way We Were’ - textiles old and new will be the next talk in the series on Tuesday, 19 February, at 7.30pm in the Tabernacl Chapel vestry. Sonja Turner, the well-known textile artist, will explain how textiles have influenced the lives of humankind from the beginning of time to the present day.

Bridge club

KEITH Bellamy and Gill Howells were the decisive winners on 7 February with an excellent score of 71.5 per cent. Dylan Raw-Rees and Mike Fellows were joint second with Jen Harris and Dai Hayes. The results confirm that Keith and Gill will represent Aberaeron Bridge Club for the Champion of Champions trophy in Llandrindod, in which the Champion Pairs from clubs in Wales will compete against each other. On Wednesday, 6 February, they held an afternoon session of bridge, in which Dawn Claxton and Chris Dennis were the winners. Aberaeron Bridge Club meets in the Royal British Legion Hall each Thursday at 6.40pm – newcomers are eagerly welcomed. Afternoon tuition for beginners and improvers is being held on Wednesdays starting at 1pm in the Royal British Legion Hall.
