School reunion
ON Saturday, 18 May, 12 former pupils of Aberaeron County School Reunion 39/45, and their guests, met in The Hive, to celebrate 30 years of reunion.
In 2018 there were 15 former pupils and their guests present. This year the number of former pupils had dropped to 12 with six guests with advancing years taking their toll.
They were met on arrival with a choice of refreshments, either juice or wine, and quickly eased into a jovial and relaxed atmosphere, whilst meeting and chatting with long-standing friends of distant school days.
Respects were expressed on the passing of Thelma Lewis (Aberaeron and Neath) – a regular supporter in the past.
A warm welcome was extended to all present, before Gaudeamus, the old school song, was sung.
Grace was respectfully announced in three languages in recognition of the school pattern of old – Latin, English and Welsh.
As usual the three-course meal was thoroughly enjoyed – a credit to Rhys and his staff.
The small successful organising committee of the group, known as Y Pwyllgor Bach, is now disbanded. Tributes were paid to Aneurin and Rhiannon for their sterling efforts from the outset, and to Rhiannon for being at every reunion in 30 years.
Her role as treasurer is completed, and the remaining funds (over £400) in the association’s account has been presented to the Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron, to do what is in the best interests of the school and pupils.
Tecwyn also played a valuable part over many years, undertaking Master of Ceremony duties with enthusiasm and skill.
Several members had travelled to be present, showing commendable commitment and loyalty – Maldwyn, from Little Chalfont in Buckinghamshire; Glenys, from Leatherhead in Surrey; Thirza, from Worksop in Nottinghamshire; Diddanwy, from Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan and Tudor, from Abergwili in Carmarthenshire.
There was a discussion over whether to continue to meet after 30 years. Sincere thanks were expressed to those present and general input. Tributes were paid to all who had played a part in contributing to the longevity and success of Reunion 39/45.
To close the proceedings, as in Aberaeron County School departure days, hymns were sung with great feeling: All People That On Earth Do Dwell and Calon Lân.
Everyone wished everyone good health, good bye and a safe journey home.

WI
MEMBERS of Aberaeron WI plus one visitor were welcomed by president Eleanor Evans.
Business matters were run through, including details of the afternoon trip to Aberglasney on 10 July, and the trips to Highgrove Garden organised by Ceredigion WI.
The newsletter was read through, and commented on, and then Eleanor introduced the speaker Mererid Jones, from Ceredigion County Council, who is the local environment services and waste engagement officer.
She gave a wealth of details regarding the council’s aim for zero waste, and explained how it is fined £200 per tonne for every tonne that does not reach its target. She gave many details of items that can be put into the clear recycling bags, including black plastic items.
Only cellophane, greaseproof and wrapping paper cannot be recycled. Recycling bags and Food Waste will continue to be collected weekly, whereas black bags will be collected every three weeks.
A box will be given to each household for three-weekly glass collection, and a new collection of Absorbent Hygiene Products will begin every two weeks.
This will include nappies, wipes and incontinence products which will no longer go to landfill.
This service will need households to register for the purple bags to be used.
Mererid answered many questions on all aspects of the waste collections, including the food waste, which is treated to become an organic fertiliser for farmers to use on their fields.
Karen Wright gave the vote of thanks for such an interesting and absorbing talk.
The raffle was won by Iris Jones, and the competition for a recycled object was won by Gloria Davies with Carianne Wilkins coming second.
Refreshments were welcomed and were served by Enid Jenkins and Anne Jackson.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 3 July, when Sara Rebman will talk on flower meadows.
