AUGUST provided somewhat of a damp start after the glorious sunshine and high temperatures of June and July.

However, the bowling green looked a little forlorn after the previous months’ heat, and certainly benefitted from having a thirst-quenching deluge.

On 4 August, fortunately a bright and sunny day, Barmouth WI held their annual event on a perfect green.

On 11 August, a day of sun and showers, they held the captain versus chairman match.

This year, the honours went to the chairman’s team, who won after an evenly-matched game.

Then the rain took over, but there was tea and biscuits in the clubhouse to compensate.

The 18 August was designated as a fun day, which consisted of obstacles and unusual or silly things to do for fun. The club president Vic Tritton was the victor, winning a very useful prize in the form of a bottle.

Rain has not stopped play in any substantial way so far, although it has tried hard at times.

However, stalwart players have even enjoyed a shower or two which makes for an interesting game.

On 1 September, the last of the trophies was played for and the Goat Cup was the goal.

The finalists at the end of a long and interesting competition, were two of the club’s lady members.

The winner was Rose Martin, who after a quite close-run competition, beat Christine Palmer, who was a worthy runner-up.

All matches and competitions have now been played and completed and members will play socially, and possibly with less pressure pursuing victory.

During the summer holiday season, the club saw new visitors, who all congratulated the club on the wonderful condition of the bowling green.

They are grateful to their contractor, for the expertise in green keeping, and to club members who give up their valuable time and effort in pursuit of keeping the green and surrounding areas in an excellent condition, no mean feat.

The club is hoping that September will prove to be a clement month, as we are nearing the end to the 2018 season, which so far has been perfect.
