Festival

THAT old showbiz saying “leave them wanting more!” was never more in evidence than at Barmouth.

The 20th and last country music festival to be organised by a team led by Mike and Angie Evans was held in Barmouth’s Talbot Square on Saturday, 2, and Sunday, 3 July.

Bathed in sunshine for much of the weekend, every last inch of space in the square was occupied by country music and line dance fans.

A top-class line-up of stars had travelled to Barmouth to be part of the farewell performance, including Wales’ own Bobby Jones, Johnny Holland, Memphis Belle, Cherry K, and headliners Dave Sheriff, Magill, and Paul Bailey.

The fans who filled the square had come from all four corners of the UK to be part of this finale.

The weather was kind and Barmouth itself seemed to exude a warm welcome to everyone.

There were a few moist eyes and lumpy throats as Cherry K brought the show to a final close on Sunday with Thank You for the Music.

Barnardo’s Big Toddle

MORE than 60 children under the age of five from Cylch Feithrin y Tonneau, Ysgol y Traeth, and Oasis Day Centre, Barmouth, took part in the annual Barnardo’s Big Toddle on 14 July.

The children were dressed up as wild animals or wearing face masks they had been busy making to toddle round the Wern Mynach conservation area.

When they finished, they enjoyed a biscuit and drink as well as time to play on the pirate boat.

They raised a total of £455.80 and our thanks go to all who took part and raised Sponsor money for this well-known children’s charity.

Sailors’ Institute

A BIG thank-you goes out to all who supported the institute’s recent annual Coffee Morning get together.

Some holidaymakers also joined in, as well as the loyal local people. The Barmouth Co-op and other local traders donated raffle prizes.

Due to the hard work of all volunteers, bread and cake makers, they raised £244.50.

It was nice to welcome a new member to ‘David’s Angels’, it was unfortunate their longest-serving member was unable to be with us.

Again, the committee members of the Barmouth Sailors’ Institute thank everyone for helping to ensure the Institute will sail on for many years to come.

Everyone is invited to the special 125-year anniversary service led by the president Rev Canon Beth Bailey in St David’s Church at 6pm on 21 August.
