Flash bang
THERE can be no doubt that Barmouth was celebrating at the weekend.
Residents were joined by thousands of visitors to mark the 150th anniversary of Barmouth Bridge opening.
Events during the day were well attended and the spectacular light and firework show made a massive splash of colour in the night sky.
Local people say it was reminiscent of the Regatta events that the town ran but the crowds on Saturday night were even bigger.
Inevitably traffic struggled but people were patient and good natured, parking spaces filled early raising fears that many would be unable to park but the mild weather meant that people from the camp sites were able to walk to and from the town swelling the visitor numbers even more.
Local businesses got a massive boost at a time that is normally becoming quieter.
The organisers, Barmouth Town Council, received praise from every angle for its work in creating the event.
On Friday, 27 October, the Barmouth Community Bonfire will be held to coincide with the Motocross event that will run over the weekend, that is likely to be another massive draw for visitors and present further opportunities for traders and accommodation providers.
Russian Choir Returns
RETURNING for another performance, the Resurrection Choir from Russia conducted by Jurij Maruk will perform a variety of music at St John’s Church Barmouth. Refreshments will also be available along with a selection of Russian items and recordings of the choir for sale.
The two-hour performance commences at 7.30pm on 1 November, in St John’s Church.
Fright Fest
THE Buffs Club will be hosting three events at the end of the month.
On Saturday, 28 October, the Hallowteens Party will welcome 13 to 17-year-olds from 7pm till 10pm.
On Monday, 30 October, there will be a Horror Movie Night for over 18s, opening at 7pm.
Then on Tuesday, 31 October, there will be a Kids Hallowe’en Party from 4.30pm till 6.30pm.
Any funds raised at this event will go to Barmouth Junior Football Club.
Bowls Club
THE September weather has not been very kind to the bowling club this year.
Nevertheless, on 2 September, the team members enjoyed a warm sunny day as guests of Fairbourne Bowling Club.
The event was to decide the winners of the much coveted Shield.
After a gruelling afternoon’s play, the Barmouth team emerged winners.
On this occasion the Fairbourne Club were the ‘Hosts with the most’.
The Barmouth team were entertained to a wonderful after game tea party and the usual team banter and raffle.
All in all a super afternoon.
However, Barmouth cannot afford to rest on its laurels, as Fairbourne is a force to be reckoned with.
On 9 September, another showery Saturday, when, between showers, the undeterred players took on rivals for the Goat Cup.
The winner of this trophy was Rose Martin.
Rose also celebrated her birthday, so a double for Rose.
The following Saturday, 16 September, the Captain v Chairman teams were once again hampered by the weather conditions and the game was called off. Rain stopped play!
On 23 September, the team from Machynlleth were our guests and presented a very strong side, and this very interesting and arduous game resulted in the stronger side winning.
30 September saw the Annual General Meeting taking place , when it was reported that the club had another eventful and successful season.
The final match of the season, was played on 7 October, between the captain and chairman’s teams.
The captain’s team on this occasion just beat the chairman’s team, which was once again played ‘dodging the showers’.
The evening of 7 October, was spent in having a wonderful end of season presentation dinner.
It was decided at the Annual General Meeting that the closing of the green date would be extended to the 21 October.
Royal British Legion
THE Barmouth Branch AGM of the Royal British Legion will be held at the Barmouth Sailors’ Institute at 7pm on Monday, 30 October.
It is a particularly important meeting this year as it is vital that we involve new members in the running of the local Branch.
All members are cordially invited to attend.
The Barmouth Branch is also delighted to announce that over £5,000 was raised as part of the National Poppy Appeal for 2016/17 covering Penrhyndeudraeth to Barmouth.
This is an amazing total and we’d like to thank all the shops who hosted collecting boxes, all of our collectors and all of those who gave their time helping the branch to achieve such a magnificent total.
Thank you also to those who helped through their donations.WalkTHE latest instalment of a challenging but stunningly scenic 20-mile walk is taking place this weekend.The 24th Barnardos Sponsored Walk takes place on Saturday 21 October.The event, which raises money in aid of the UK’s most vulnerable children, will start in the Ysegethin Inn, Tal-y-bont at 8.30am and participants can choose to walk 5, 10, 15 or 20 miles around the circuit of Foel Ddu, Cwm Nantcol, Llyn Howell, Moelfre, Pont Scethin and Llyn Erddyn.
