Purple plaque
CHWARAE Teg and Partners are inviting members of the public to the unveiling of the third ‘Purple Plaque’ in Criccieth. It will mark the achievements and honour Wales’ first female MP, Megan Lloyd George and celebrate remarkable Welsh women on 11 October - International Day of the Girl.
The unveiling of the Purple Plaque will take place at the former Lloyd George family home, Bryn Awelon Nursing Home, Lôn Fêl, Criccieth at 2pm on Friday, 11 October, and include speeches from Baroness Eluned Morgan AM, Julie Morgan AM, Jane Hutt AM, Chwarae Teg and members of the Lloyd George family. This will be followed at 2.30pm by a celebratory event at Criccieth Memorial Hall, High Street.
Megan Lloyd George became the first female MP for a Welsh constituency, Anglesey, from 1929-1951 and later Carmarthen from 1957-1966. Throughout this time she championed women in significant ways. During her maiden speech she spoke about rural housing and the impact that poor housing was having on women on Anglesey, such as the higher death rate from TB among women compared with men. She campaigned for equal pay and demanded that the government did more to give women a responsible role in the war effort. She was also a member of the National Eisteddfod’s Gorsedd of Bards (1935) and the president of the Parliament for Wales campaign of the early 1950s.
Emma Tamplin, Chwarae Teg, said: “We would be delighted if people from local communities joined us at the unveiling of the Purple Plaque and the celebratory event, it’s very important to us and our partners. I’m sure Megan Lloyd George would be proud to see as many people there as possible, remembering all that she stood and worked for.”
RNLI shop THE Criccieth RNLI shop and boathouse will now be open from 11am to 5pm each day (unless the weather is particularly awful). Christmas card stocks will be vanishing quickly, but there are lots of other stocking fillers, and even more substantial presents - including membership of Storm Force, which gives older youngsters a chance to feel part of our volunteer crew. The shop has now been refurbished, but the welcome you will receive is still the same, and obviously every purchase you make will help to keep our crew afloat, and you and your family safe on or beside the sea.
