St Mary’s Women’s Fellowship

ON 7 January, seven member attended on a very cold January night, when the speaker was Martin Michell and Jessie opened with the Lord’s Prayer.

Martin, who is an accomplished musician, brought along his electric keyboard and organised a very entertaining evening of singing. It was followed by a pleasant buffet to welcome in the New Year. Martin discussed the ‘Singing for Fun ‘project he has organised in the library, where everyone can go once a month and have two hours of singing and fellowship (and the occasional quiz). Jessie gave the vote of thanks and Bethan won the raffle.

On 21 January, eight members attended, but unfortunately the speaker could not attend, due to unforeseen circumstances. Jessie organised an impromptu quiz which everyone enjoyed. New member Pat was also welcomed and Mary won the raffle.

On 4 February, seven members attended and best wishes were sent to members who couldn’t attend due to illness and or caring responsibilities. The speaker was David Lewis, who gave an interesting and informative presentation on ‘Snaps from around the World’, including Yellowstone National Park, Idaho, Alberta Canada, Vancouver, Utah, Glasgow and the Outer Hebrides.

The photographs and David’s narrative were most enjoyable. Jessie gave the vote of thanks and Sheila won the raffle. On 19 February, the speaker was Andrea Vaughan. She also attended last year and gave an introduction to exercise for the more mature person.

Andrea reminded everyone of the very important role exercise plays throughout our lives, but especially as we get older. It helps to keep people fit, to avoid falls, improve balance, improve mood, improve confidence and to keep independent as long as possible. Andrea explained that people can be referred to the Leisure Centre (National Exercise Referral Scheme) by any health professional.

Some members had already attended following Andrea’s presentation last year, and recommend it to all.

Andrea covered the ‘Sit Less, Move More, Feel Good’ programme which you can do at home, and demonstrated and inspired members with the NHS Choices ‘Exercise for Older People , and again gave examples on how to improve strength, flexibility and balance.

Irene gave the vote of thanks and Glen won the raffle.
