North West Cancer Research

The Harlech branch of the North West Cancer Research Charity has been busy fundraising over the last few months and recently held a coffee evening in Harlech which raised over £1,000.

The money will help to fund research at the charity’s centre at Bangor University.

Thanks was given to all who help organise the event and to those who helped make the evening so successful, including members of the local band.

The charity also received a financial boost with the presentation of a cheque from the captains of Royal St David’s Golf Club who had nominated North West Cancer Research as one of their charities for their year in office.

Captains Edwin Jones and Diane Lamkin presented a cheque for over £1,300 to Harlech branch chair Myfanwy Jones.

The Harlech Branch has so far this year sent a donation of £5,000 to the charity HQ in Liverpool.

The President, Jan Cole, welcomed members, and guest Jean Storey to the June meeting.

Jan introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Carys from Carysmatic, who gave a very lively and energetic talk about the benefits of Pilates.

Carys, a very popular and knowledgeable tutor who has various classes in the surrounding areas, demonstrated the art of good posture, and the benefits, especially to the senior members of gentle exercise. Edwina Evans gave Carys a vote of thanks of behalf of the members. Refreshments were served, with time for everyone to have a chat, and purchase items from the sales table, before the commencement of the business meeting.

Debbie was asked to give a presentation on how the new GDPR Legislation would affect the way that the WI Institute collect, store and use personal data.

Jan read the County Letter with items of interest noted, dates of forthcoming events commenced with a Vintage Tea afternoon at LLanelltyd Village Hall, at 2pm on 28 June, with guest speaker for the afternoon, Geoff Cole from Cemlyn Tea Rooms.

An evening treasure hunt in Barmouth on 18 July, with an optional fish and chip supper.

An afternoon of entertainment by WI members, titled Anything Goes, to take place at the Theatre Hafen, Newtown on 29 September.

A reminder was given regarding the Meirionnydd County Show exhibition of members work, celebrating 150 years; the theme being past and present. Jan gave a report on the two-day visit to Cardiff for the NFWI AGM.

The resolution for 2018 resulted 98 per cent in favour of Mental Health Matters.

Christine gave out details of the next Dining Club outing on 4 July, a new venue for Harlech members, The Marshall Supper Club, held in LLandanwg, menu available for anyone wishing to join the fun.

Edwina informed members, there would be a coffee morning held in The Old Library on Saturday morning, 7 July, 10am-12.30pm to raise much needed funds to maintain this established building, which is used by the community of Harlech and surrounding areas for lots of events and meetings.

The winner of the competition was Joyce Wood, and the raffle prize winner was Annette.

The next meeting will be in The Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 11 July, the guest speaker being Sophie Rendle (Vets in Practice). Guests and new members are welcome.
