Hanes Llambed

THE first meeting of the 2018/9 year was held in Trinity Saint David’s Old Hall.

The speaker was Cwrtnewydd resident Simon Evans, who gave the first of what will eventually be two talks about his home parish of Llanwenog.

He will speak on the same subject in the spring. He explained that the parish was defined by the Afon Cledlyn and its tributaries. He’d described its early history from the Stone Age, through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, with its several identified hill forts. Llanwenog church was founded as a wooden structure in about 500 AD with the current structure built much later-in the 14th century.

There was a Battle of Llanwenog in 981 AD between the Welsh and invading Danes. The speaker went on to describe the Puritan struggle and the civil war. Later nonconformist ministers established private academies and schools from 1750 onwards. A particularly important development was the founding of Unitarian chapels in early 19th century within the parish. By the time of the 1840’s there was a terrible agricultural situation following disastrously bad harvests.

The next meeting of Hanes Llambed will take place in October when the subject will be the Cardiganshire War Tribunals of the First World War.
