SELWYN Walters, chairman, welcomed all to the October meeting when Prof Nigel Nayling, a member of the academic staff at the University of Trinity St David, gave a talk on the Sunken Forest at Borth.

Tree stumps can be seen frequently at low tide, as in many other parts of the coastline, but following storms and high winds, much of the sand is eroded away, and more become visible. Gerald of Wales wrote of his sightings at Newgale in 1188 AD when travelling through Wales, and the Black Book of Carmarthen (1250 AD) refers to the story of Cantre’r Gwaelod, well known to us in this area.

However, archaeological excavations and studies have revealed that the forest along the coast from Borth to Ynys Las are much older than once believed, dating back to about 4,500 BC. Ancient footprints, both animal and human have been found; where did they come from, when Britain was linked to the continent during the last ice-age? Sea-level is now 30 metres higher than it was at that time.

The studies that have been carried out, and are still ongoing, not only record what has been there in the past, but also considers what measures can be taken to preserve the coastline from further erosions, and for how long.

An interesting discussion followed, and Nigel Nayling was warmly thanked by the chairman.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 15 November, 7.30pm at the Old Hall of the University, when Richard Rees will be giving a talk on ‘The London Dams that never came to Wales, and how the London County Council tried to steal the River Towy.’
