THE November meeting was well attended when Richard Rees from Llanwrda gave a very interesting talk about how a vast area of mid-Wales could have been drowned by the London County Council in the 1890s.Richard is particularly interested in railway lines, particularly the line through mid-Wales from Swansea to Shrewsbury. On researching this line he came across plans to re-direct the line in the Irfon Valley, and these had been drawn up by the London Water (Welsh reservoirs and works). The chief engineer was Alexander Richardson Binnie, and he had devised a plan which would have drowned large areas of Wales between Llanidloes and Swansea in order to provide London with pure water.Richard Rees made many trips to The House of Lords, British Library, Kew, the Metropolitan Archives as well as many visits to the National Library at Aberystwyth, and his findings make a fascinating read in the booklet he has published Everybody can have their own bathwater. He was warmly thanked by Selwyn Walters for his fascinating talk, an insight into his vast knowledge on the subject. The next meeting will be the members Christmas social night on the 14 December, and held at the Church hall.
