AT the meeting on 11 January, the president welcomed members back after the Christmas break and wished them a happy and successful new year for 2019.

Several members were unable to attend, some unwell, with four sending apologies.

Birthday cards were given to Carole and Rose.

Ann Lewis, who manages Goffa Neuadd, sent a thank you card for the Christmas gift that Llanfair WI had sent.

Minutes of the December meeting were read and signed.

The newsletter was read, announcing the federation’s centenary, with events planned for later in the year, including a celebration lunch and a trip to Denman College.

Te Cymreig is being held at Dyffryn Village Hall on 15 March, including afternoon tea and entertainment by the children from the local school.

Fee of £7, names and payments to be given to Carole and Sue at the February meeting.

Pauline read a reminder of the six resolutions for 2019 and members each voted for their preference, with the various results totalled for sending to Christine Hemsley.

Articles are still needed for the next issue of Brethyn Cartref.

They should be of general WI news, visits, craft ideas and there will be a section of skipping rhymes and playground games.

Dig deep into your memories and send articles to Sheila Maxwell.

Sue presented the treasurer’s report.

Several members expressed traffic concerns.

A section of the road between Talsarnau and Briwet Bridge will be closed overnight on Mondays to Fridays from 16 January for two weeks, from 7pm to 5am.

There was also concern about proposals to alter the upper car park in Harlech to accommodate tourist coaches, as traffic in the town is already very difficult during the holiday periods.

The president then welcomed Benji and Margaret Williams to speak about the Ardudwy Knights, illustrated by slides.

Benji described how the knights had originated as a group of re-enactors, performing historical–style battles and fights in the castles of north Wales.

They have also been employed in many film productions in the area.

Proceeds are given to charities and deserving causes in local communities.

In striving for authenticity, the group has researched the feuds between the Welsh and English, contributing to a greater understanding of Welsh history when performing for schools.

Benji and Margaret passed round equipment including a sword, helmet and chainmail head gear, the latter ‘woven’ in heavy wire by Margaret.

These are all heavy and add about eight stone when a knight is in costume, which becomes extremely tiring when the knights march from one castle to another!

After answering many questions, Benji and Margaret were warmly thanked and applauded by the members for such a stunning presentation.

The knights hope to perform in Harlech at Easter and August Bank Holiday.

Raffle winner: Theresa Lampert.

Competition results: 1, Pauline, 2, Theresa and 3, Sandra.

The next meeting will be on Friday, 8 February, with the speaker to be confirmed.

Competition: Make a crêpe paper flower.

Community council

DURING budget discussions, it was reported that the council had spent £18,799.46 since the start of the new financial year and this was £3,404.14 less expenditure than what was earmarked in the budget for the year.

After discussion, it was decided to keep the precept at £13,000.

Cllr Mair Thomas made it known that the “Araf/Slow” sign had been painted on the road before reaching the car park in Llandanwg.

Cllr Thomas also told fellow councillors that she had received a complaint that one of the benches in the car park in Y Maes, Llandanwg needed attention.

It was agreed that some members would go and inspect this bench to see what needed to be done.

It was asked if the double yellow lines that have been painted along side the road could be extended from the bridge further down the road as they stop in a dangerous place.

There is a need to cut the trees down on top of Cae Cethin hill down to the entrance of Cae Cethin because they hang over the pavement that is on the sustance eight route.

Wanted to know who sets how much the cost is going to be in different car parks as there is so much difference with the payment between the car parks across the County.

The public footpath between Ffridd and Dinas needs attention and it was agreed the clerk would contact Liz Haynes regarding this.

The next council meeting will be held on Wednesday, 27 February.
