THE president welcomed members to the meeting.

Pauline welcomed the guest speaker, Sandra Atkin, a long-standing member, to speak about “Journey to Tibet and Yak”.

Sandra gave a wonderful presentation about a visit to Lhasa, the centre of the Buddhist world in Tibet, arranged by her son who was living in China.

Sandra gave a hilarious account of the overnight train journey, where the six family members found themselves scattered into different sleeping compartments, sharing with locals who had already been onboard for over a day and night.

Sandra’s photographs gave a good insight into the religious life in Tibet, with crowds of people visiting temples to pray in contact with the prayer wheels, which they touched always walking clockwise. This also happened many times throughout the day, using prayer wheels in the streets.

Yaks were the main source of food, served in various ways, and all parts of the animal were used to produce household textiles, rugs and other items.

Sandra was frequently dizzy with the altitude and lost her sense of smell, but all returned to normal on the flight home. After taking questions, Sandra was warmly thanked by Pauline for this incredible insight into very different way of life.

Turning to WI business, Minutes of March’s meeting were read and signed. Members who had ordered diaries paid Pat.

The Newsletter was read.

An email from Jill Houliston about reorganising the groups was discussed. Members were particularly keen for Barmouth to remain in the same group as Llanfair, Harlech and probably Deudraeth, for convenient travel, but felt that Ffestiniog was too far.

Following receipt of Gwynedd Meirionnydd Accounts, Sue will query several anomalies.

Next Meeting: 11 May, “Fabric Printing” by Nerys Hughes; Competition – Printed Tea Towel.

During tea, NFWI booklets were circulated about the Mental Health Resolution, Accessing MyWI, Food Povert , Healthy Living & Wellbeing Week.

The raffle was drawn and Sandra judged the Mountain Collage Competition
