Eisteddfod Ceredigion
THERE was a well-attended meeting in Llanfair Hall in early January, of interested people from both Llanfair and Cellan to discuss the 2020 Eisteddfod, which will take place in Tregaron.
The parishes of Llanfair and Cellan have been allocated a combined total of £2,000 to raise as a funding contribution towards the event.
The 30-plus people at the meeting were keen to help raise this money.
As a first step a committee was established of: chairman, Eleri Davies; vice-chairman, Lillian Jones; joint secretaries, Dan and Aerwen Griffiths; and treasurer Alwen Edwards.
It was decided that there would be a coffee morning on Saturday, 23 February, in Llanfair Hall.
Carols by Candlelight
DURING the period leading up to Christmas there was an extremely successful evening in the hall entitled ‘Carols by Candlelight’.
Music was provided by Paula Barker, with song sheets and leadership of the singing from Dan Griffiths.
Cawl was made by Joyce Dickson.
The evening was held as an alternative to carol singers travelling around the village and visiting many outlying homes and farms.
Donations were sought during the evening, with the £637 being raised, paid to the Indonesian tsunami appeal.
Christmas party
THE children’s party was held in the hall, with a visit from Santa being a highlight.
It was organised by Annwen Bell and Rhian Lewis-Davies.
Lottery award
THE Village Hall Committee were pleased to receive news of an award from the Big Lottery fund of almost £10,000 towards improvements it plans to make to the hall and the surrounding area.
In the early autumn Alan Leech undertook a survey of residents and all users of the hall to try to find out what activities they would like to see take place in the building, along with improvements which would help the establishment of these activities, together with making improvements to the facility.
Following this, a lottery bid was made.
The funding will result in a new more efficient boiler, new flooring to the rear, additional shelving, some electrical work and improvements to the car parking.
Health activities
FOLLOWING requests made within the public survey recently undertaken for more keep fit related health activities, two-day time sessions have begun.
Monday mornings in the hall sees a keep fit class, whilst on Wednesday mornings there is a session of ‘gentle yoga’.
Both have been well supported.
Community council
IN the January meeting of the community council, the councillors decided to leave the local rate precept unchanged from that of the previous year.
Bill Parker attended and reported on a meeting of the health board which he had attended at which consideration was given as to how local communities could try to raise levels of community ‘resilience’.
Discussion took place on how that might apply to the Llanfair Clydogau Council area.
There was also a report about a meeting which had recently taken place of a group of people who are regular users of Longwood Community Woodland.
50th anniversary
MEMBERS of the Llanfair community were pleased to host a celebratory event recognising the 50th anniversary of Rev Bill Fillery with regard to his ordination as a priest within the church in Wales.
Bill has, for the past six years, overseen St Mary’s Church in Llanfair and All Saints Church in Cellan. He is also often active in a number of wider community activities within the parish.
Over 50 people attended a social event in the hall, for refreshments.
This followed a church service.
