Heritage Lottery Project

THE Heritage Lottery funded project, with its main focus on the period of 1914-18 and the effect of the First World War on the village, its people, its economy and social life, alongside details of all who served in the armed forces, is well underway.

Volunteers have met a number of times to share their research findings and personal local information about those who were enlisted.

Computer classes

THERE has been a good attendance at a computer skills course in the village hall.

This course which arose out of work being done by volunteers on the project linked to the First and Second

World Wars. It is run by Helen Thomas and focuses on the use of a laptop computer, utilisation of a search engine, and the various ways research can be undertaken.

Women’s Institute.

THE WI has continued to hold its monthly meetings.

June saw members gather at the home of Gwen Adams for their annual picnic.

The July meeting was in the Hall when the activity was ‘short mat bowls’ when Sally Leech led on how to play the game and a number participated in the sport for the first time.

Llanfair Show

A GOOD deal of work has been undertaken by the hall committee in preparing for the annual show, which will take place on the August Bank Holiday Monday.

This will be the third show since it was reintroduced after an absence of many years. Show schedules are available from Llanfair Shop and detail is also on the village website.

Talk by Lester Mason

AS part of the research work being undertaken in the village, Dr Lester Mason of Trinity St David’s University gave a talk about memorials which have been erected after the First World War, with a special focus on west Wales. He illustrated his talk pictorially by a power point presentation.

The audience was very appreciative of his wide range of knowledge and considerable expertise.

Beer Festival

THE Llanfair Beer Festival took place in and around the village hall.

There was a very fine array of beers and ciders. Attendances were high.

Community Council

THE following were elected unopposed at the May election: Arwyn Evans, Alan Leech, David Jones and Glennis Gratwick.

There is one unfilled position.

The council area also includes Cellan and there the elected members, who were unopposed are: Gareth Harries, Euros Jones and Andrew Williams.

There are two unfilled vacancies.

At a recent meeting of the council there was discussion about the problems caused by large lorries, whose drivers are “lost”, using the narrow lanes of Llanfair Mountain.

One recently was physically stuck for some three hours. It was decided to write to the county council to suggest the installation of a warning road sign on the lower land in the valley, on the road leading to the upland.

Treasure Hunt

A VERY successful and well supported Treasure Hunt took place.

It was organised by Kieran Gartland.

At the conclusion of the hunt, participants called in for food to Llangybi golf club house.
