St Mary’s Church

THE harvest thanksgiving service at St Mary’s Church was taken by the Rev Bill Fillery.

The guest speaker was Rev Canon Andy Herrick, vicar of Lampeter.

People in the village were encouraged to give tins of food, before or at the church.

There was a good response and the tins were then presented, by Bill Fillery, to the organisers of the Lampeter Food Bank.

Canon Herrick took as the broad theme for his address “what’s mine is yours” and gave a number of examples to show the importance of the concept.

He also took the story of the “Good Samaritan” from Luke’s gospel to illustrate the significance of that story.

Pop up restaurant

CATH’S Vegan Kitchen operated a successful pop-up restaurant in the village hall, making use of the high quality kitchen facilities which are available.

New book

ALAN Leech has spent the last year researching the life history of William Jones, who in the nineteenth century owned most of the land in the parish and who was very actively involved in the establishment of the Board School in the village.

His wife was nationally famous for her relationship with an English gentleman, Edward Hesketh Formby, with whom she chose, upon her death, to be buried alongside, in the famous “Lovers’ Graves”.

Alan Leech has published a book entitled: “William Jones, Politics, Glandenys and the Lovers’ Graves” which is attracting much local interest.

There will a launch event for the book in Llanfair Hall on Friday, 3 November, at 7.30pm.

Ysgol y Dderi

THE senior pupils from Ysgol y Dderi in Llangybi chose to hold their harvest thanksgiving service in St Mary’s Church in Llanfair.

They entertained parents and visitors to a programme of high quality singing.

In addition every child made a speaking contribution in recounting the story of the harvest.

The children were very much aided by the work undertaken with them by staff at the school in preparing for the event.
