Gwynedd police have issued a warning after fake cash was found in Porthmadog.

NWP Gwynedd South said: “We’re reminding businesses to stay alert for counterfeit pound notes following a recent attempt to pay in fake cash in Porthmadog.

“Fake £10, £20 and £50 notes are most often passed during busy periods when staff may be distracted. If a counterfeit note is accepted, the loss falls directly on the business – it cannot be reimbursed.”

The Bank of England advises checking security features on notes, feeling the texture, looking for the hologram and checking the metallic thread.

If you suspect a note is counterfeit, refuse it if safe to do so and report it to police.
