Rotary club

THE Rotary Club of Llanidloes had a busy meeting on 26 June. It started with Rotarian Justin Beese introducing the speaker for the evening, Dan Owen, headteacher of Llanidloes High School, who told the group how good the school was doing, and all about the new Pupil Support Centre and the refurbishing of the Autistic Spectrum Centre.

President John Selwyn Smith said it has been agreed to give £2,000 left to the club by the late Fred Davies to this cause.

Rotarian Bar Holmes gave the vote of thanks.

Then, as president John Selwyn’s final act, he bestowed a Paul Harris Fellowship (highest award Rotary can give) on Rotarian Stephen Cox for his outstanding work and dedication to those less fortunate than ourselves.

Finally president John handed his chain of office over to Rotarian Tim Chilton who took over as the new president from 1 July.

Tim announced that ‘Youth and the Local Community’ will be his theme for 2019-20.

In president Tim Chilton’s first meeting in charge, his first duty was to formally induct new members into the club: Justin Beese, Sarah Board, Kevin Jones, Ian Taylor and Terry Thomas.

Following which, they retired to the bar for an evening of fellowship with family members and friends, at which the Red Lion Hotel laid on a splendid buffet.

The club now has 35 members (32 full members and three associate members).

At next week’s meeting they will be discussing the club’s youth programme of the next 12 months and finalising carnival details. Llanidloes Town Carnival is on Saturday, 13 July.
