FUGS collection
ONCE again Falcon Useless Golfing Society members raised just under £1,000 during their annual Christmas carol singing tour of the village.
The magnificent sum was made up of some £750 collected on the night plus around £250 in donations after the event.
Despite cold, wet weather several members turned out as a mark of respect to FUGS founder and stalwart John Murphy, who sadly passed away on 6 December.
FUGS member Dylan (Tanni) Edwards was so delighted with the success of the event he wrote the following on his Facebook page: “Llanilar, I say this around this time every year. I, we (FUGS), absolutely love you! Out carol singing tonight raised a brilliant £750ish!
“You haven’t only done yourselves proud again but, I’ll guarantee you, you’ve made Mr Chairman John Murphy proud!
“Sure he’s looking down on us now with a BIG smile on his face. Diolch o galon pawb.”
FUGS’ fundraising efforts will continue with its annual charity golf day at Aberystwyth Golf Club on Saturday, 18 May.
WI
Members of Llanilar WI are now looking forward to another busy programme which will start on 9 January with Judy Lile talking about the history of the carrier bag.
The following week they will be going to see the pantomime in Aberystwyth. Why not go and join them every Wednesday evening for a couple of hours. They meet in the community centre at 7.30pm.
Over the last few weeks they have enjoyed a variety of speakers and have also made their own fun.
They held their AGM at the beginning of November and the main officers will be as follows: president, Hazel Rimmer; vice presidents, Judy Lile (programme secretary) and Jean Evans (press); treasurer, Carol Evans; Margaret Peel (correspondence secretary) and Eirlys Jones (archives and register).
The following week they were entertained by the Showtime Singers who sang popular songs from the First World War era and dressed appropriately for the period. Margaret Rees thanked them for a professional performance. It was an enjoyable evening with a blend of songs showing the humour and horror of war.
The next speaker was David Lloyd, who worked for many years with ITV all over the country and he talked about his experiences and of his time growing up in Aberystwyth and what led him to work with ITV. Members were very surprised also to be entertained with some magic.
At the end of November they held their Christmas dinner at Tafarn y Maes, Capel Bangor. It was well attended and enjoyed by all.
On 5 December they visited the Christmas Festival at Ysbyty Cynfyn Church.
They were made very welcome by members and saw that several groups in the area had all prepared a small tableau on the theme of Women from the Bible, which they all enjoyed.
Before they went home, Delyth Morris Jones gave a short talk and they then had cawl followed by tea and mince pies.
The following week they made their own table arrangement for Christmas under the guidance of Donald Morgan.
Donald then chose the Best on the Night: 1. Janet Parry; 2. Sian Richards and Jean Evans; 3. Carol Evans, Betty Wakelin and Eirlys Jones. The raffle was won by Margaret Rees.
An entertaining social was held for their last meeting before Christmas when they played pass the parcel; Betty Wakelin gave a reading followed by members of Abba (Hazel, Sian and Eirlys) calling in with members joining them to dance and sing a few songs.
Everyone had brought a small plate of food which they all enjoyed tucking into before they went home after they got a gift from the Secret Santa sack.
